Residential Exemption Fraud Report

Residential property tax exemption (4%) fraud is a serious issue that affects every taxpayer in Cherokee County. The residential exemption (4%) is a benefit for homeowners living in Cherokee County who legally own and occupy their residence. The legal residence exemption is NOT for homeowners who rent, allow the home to be occupied by a family member or friend, allow it to sit vacant, or be used for commercial purposes, etc.
When people commit tax exemption fraud, the taxpayers of our county are left to make up the difference in lost tax revenue. This increases the amount of taxes paid by everyone, whether it be personal or real property.
If you know anyone who is committing residential exemption fraud on a home that they do not occupy, we urge you to report this to our office at (864) 487-2552 or by completing and submitting the form on this page. You may remain anonymous if you wish.
The penalty for this is subject to 100% of the tax amount paid at 4% and 100% of the tax amount at 6%. Penalties for Residential Exemption Fraud may apply to multiple years.
