Public Feedback Encouraged – Cherokee County working on redistricting following 2020 Census
Cherokee County is in the process of reviewing and approving a redistricting plan, which includes redrawing the lines of council member districts to accommodate for population changes following the 2020 Census; and we encourage the public to share their input.
This process is required by the South Carolina Code of Laws Section 4-9-90. The law requires counties to redistrict within a reasonable time prior to the next general election following the federal decennial census.
The South Carolina Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Office provides an overview of redistricting.
Cherokee County is working to finalize the redistricting process for Council Districts prior to the opening of candidate filing on Monday, March 16, 2022.
On January 20th, County Council adopted a resolution establishing criteria for the development of the 2020 County Council redistricting plan. The Cherokee County Redistricting Plan will be on the Cherokee County Council’s February 7th and February 22nd agendas. We invite you to review the maps we’ve attached near the bottom of this article. One is of our existing council district map and the other is the proposed map.
Please notice these changes and, if you’d like to provide your input, please consider attending our next council meeting (February 7, 2022). The meeting will be held at 5:00 p.m. at our Administration Building, located at 110 Railroad Ave., Gaffney, SC 29340.
Also attached below is a breakdown of the data collected for both our existing districts and proposed districts.
