Cherokee County Assistant Administrator

Reports to the County Administrator; Responsible for oversight of County operations including management, planning, budgeting, coordination of activities and daily operations.  Assists in complex policy decisions and negotiations.  Interacts regularly with elected officials, including County Council, providing information, updates, and recommendations as necessary. Acts on behalf of the County Administrator in their absence.

  • Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business management or closely related field.
  • Ten years of responsible experience in working in local government and seeking to make a positive difference in and outside the organization.
  • Prefer experience in governmental financial planning, as well as preparation and review of organization-wide budgets.
  • Experience with ensuring the implementation of all County policies.
  • Skills in planning, directing, and administering programs with the ability to prioritize multiple projects that may overlap or occur simultaneously.
  • Possessing polished written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to engage, interact and communicate tactfully with audiences of all levels, both internal (staff) and external (public), including the ability to listen and find creative solutions that meet the objective of the County.
  • Extensive computer software experience, including advanced proficiency with all modules of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Understanding of Code of Laws of South Carolina.
  • Must reside in Cherokee County within one year of hire.

Appraiser

Cherokee County is seeking a qualified candidate for an appraiser position in the Tax Assessor’s Office.  Duties include, but not limited to, listing and appraising property, performing tasks related to the valuation and assessment of residential, agricultural, commercial and complex real estate.  Capable of answering questions from the public regarding assessed values and pertinent appraisals. 

  • Requires four years of appraisal experience
  • Ability to work well with the public
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must have a SC Appraiser’s License
  • Must have a valid driver’s license

Building Inspector

Cherokee County is seeking qualified applicants for a Building Inspector.  Duties include, but are not limited to, performing inspections of commercial and residential construction to ensure compliance with adopted codes and the code of ordinances.  Also, assists with office procedures and field work in zoning, permitting and property maintenance code issues.  Reports to the Chief Building Official.

Qualification:

  • Must have knowledge of international and national construction codes
  • Preferred ICC Residential or Commercial Combination Inspector certification, or have the ability, to gain certification within two years
  • Must qualify for and obtain registration with SCLLR as a code enforcement officer for continued employment
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Three years of experience as a building contractor or building inspector or combination of education and experience which provides the skills, knowledge and experience required
  • Computer skills including using standard and customized software applications
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to successfully complete a drug screen and criminal background check

Roads and Bridges Equipment Operator II

Provides the necessary transportation as well as operate a bulldozer, excavator, front-end loader or backhoe.  Maintenance of structures such as highways, streets and temporary roads and properly maintain right of ways.

  • Must have valid drivers’ license
  • Ability to read maps
  • One to three months related experience and/or training
  • Must successfully complete drug screen

Recycling CDL Driver

Drives the recycling truck and collects, sorts and packages recyclable materials.  Responsible for completing routes in a timely manner and performing routine maintenance checks of the truck according to established guidelines.

  • Must have CDL license
  • Must be able to lift 10 pounds
  • Ability to deal with the public in friendly and professional manner
  • Must be able to successfully complete a drug screen

Solid Waste Clerk

Cherokee County is seeking a clerk for the Solid Waste Department.  The duties will include, but not limited to, answering phones and emails, filing, creating requisitions, general clerical duties, and dealing with the public with problems and concerns. 

 

  • Must have H.S. Diploma or GED
  • Must have a minimum of two years clerical experience
  • Must have two years’ experience managing public complaints and requests
  • Must be able to successfully pass a drug screen

Solid Waste Collections Drivers

Cherokee County is seeking qualified candidates to fill open positions for Solid Waste Collection Drivers. Drivers are responsible for completing daily routes with two collectors to pick up household garbage door to door throughout the County, City of Gaffney and Town of Blacksburg. Must monitor the safety of the crew, perform daily pre and post trip inspections, and report any and all truck maintenance issues.

Qualifications:

  • Must have valid CDL Class B license
  • Must be able to learn and follow daily routes
  • Prefer experience with heavy trucks
  • Must successfully complete a drug screen

The beginning hourly rate is $21.00.

Part Time Deputy Coroner

The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Deputy Coroner. The Deputy works under the direction of the Coroner and duties include but not limited to securing crime scenes, collecting evidence and testifying in court. Professionalism, attention to detail and ability to prioritize under stressful situations is a must. Hours worked are dependent upon need which can include nights, weekends and holidays. Ten hours budgeted per week.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Good computer skills (Word and Excel)
  • Good communication skills
  • Must live in Cherokee County
  • Prefer experience in death investigations, law enforcement or forensic science
  • Must have valid SC Driver’s License
  • Must successfully pass a drug screen and background check

This position is a grade 11 with a minimum beginning annual salary of $6,130.80.
