Cherokee County, SC INFORMATION RELEASE Oct 7. at 11:00am:

Please be aware of 10-15 mph wind gusts overnight tonight and into early Tuesday afternoon. These gusts could cause limbs still hanging from Helene to fall.

Cherokee County, City of Gaffney and Town of Blacksburg offices are open normal hours.

The Town of Blacksburg still does not have phone service; to reach the town or Blacksburg Police Department, email [email protected] or [email protected].

Cherokee County schools will announce its decision on Tuesday later this afternoon.

Most county roads are open.

  • The Public Works Department continues to work a small number of gravel cut-through roads that remain blocked. Mintz Farm Road and Pennington Lane will remain closed indefinitely. Vassey Road should be open by Tuesday.
  • SCDOT continues to work Bonner Lake Road, which will be closed between 10th Street and Limestone Street for some time.

Please remain cautious of low-hanging power lines and roadside debris, especially at night. The National Guard continues to access conditions.

Approximately 2% Cherokee County residents remain without power.

As the county resumes normal operations, these updates may become less frequent.

FOOD & WATER DISTRIBUTION – FINAL NOTICE

Food and water distribution sites at the Midway Complex and Broad River Church will NO longer be serving on site.

Volunteers will staff four feeding locations, serving hot meals from 5 to 7 p.m., through this evening only.

FEMA

Due to the large number of individuals seeking assistance, the FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance Team will now be at the Cherokee County Emergency Operations Center, at 213 Alma St., Gaffney, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

When you arrive at the EOC, the FEMA team is set up in the old school auditorium. The entrance is next to where the FEMA trailer is set up. Please be patient if there is a line.

NOTE: If you receive a denial notice from FEMA after requesting assistance, please read the entire document. In many cases, a denial simply means further documentation is needed.

Residents can also register for FEMA assistance by visiting DisasterAssistance.gov, calling 1-800-621-3362 or by using the FEMA App.

OTHER RESOURCES

The S.C. Department of Administration is planning a TeamSC County Day, where residents can apply for state or federal assistance, receive critical information and services, and receive donated goods through a drive-thru.

The County Day for Spartanburg and Cherokee counties will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at the USC Upstate Campus Life Ballroom, 800 University Way, Spartanburg.

Cherokee County has signed an agreement with the state for storm-related debris removal, which will begin toward the end of this coming week.
Residents must move debris to the right-of-way in front of their homes. Debris does not need to be bagged; if it is, only clear bags are allowed. Please make sure debris is as close to the road as possible, but not in the road.
A timetable is being developed. Crews will begin with interstates, then move on to primary roads, and then to secondary roads, making several sweeps countywide.

DSA team members will meet with anyone who comes to the EOC on those days, pre-register them for disaster assistance, review applications, provide basic information about application status and other eligible assistance, and collect documents for case files.

Pre-registering should expedite processing through the FEMA Recovery Center, expected to open in Cherokee County soon.

The S.C. National Guard is going street by street survey damage, looking for downed or leaning trees, power lines, damaged property and infrastructure, etc. A six-man National Guard chainsaw team is focusing on clearing debris off of school bus routes.

Three S.C. Baptist Convention Disaster Relief teams from the Lowcountry will arrive Sunday and should be here through Oct. 11. These chainsaw and heavy equipment groups will focus on tarping roofs and getting trees off of roofs and out of driveways. To request this kind of assistance, please call the Citizens Hotline at 864-487-2587. Priority will be given to the elderly, uninsured or those in need.

The United Way’s Unmet Needs Help Line is another resource Cherokee County residents can utilize, reach them at (864) 860-1644.

The stoplight at Highway 29 & Highway 5 in Blacksburg is on backup power and is currently working, but motorists are still advised to use caution.

South Carolina DMV has extended and waived late fees for registration renewal for September. This will be extended until November 1, 2024.

Crimes committed during a state of emergency could be considered looting, and a person found guilty of this must be fined or imprisoned or both, at the discretion of the court.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office warns residents to be aware of potential scammers as our community recovers from Hurricane Helene. If someone comes to your home and says they are from a utility company, they should have identification with them. The S.C. Forestry Commission’s burn ban for Cherokee County was lifted at 6 a.m. Friday.

Those using candles are urged to use cautions, as some homes have caught fire due to unattended candles. Also, if your home has visible damage, turn your breakers off and leave them off until the home can be inspected.

The S.C. National Guard is going street by street survey damage, looking for downed or leaning trees, power lines, damaged property and infrastructure, etc.
Cherokee County and SCDOT opened 11 roads on Thursday, including some that had previously been cleared but had new trees or power lines fall on them:

OPENINGS AND CLOSINGS

Cherokee County government offices will reopen on Wednesday 8:30 am and operate on regular business hours.

If you are Interested in volunteering for disaster relief recovery – you can begin by calling the citizen hotline number. A CITIZEN HOTLINE has been set up 1-864-487-2587 to report damages and for information on food, water, shelter, and volunteer sign-up.

Cherokee School District has been canceled through Friday. There will also be no E learning as well. No after school activities through Friday.  This will be reassessed over the weekend.

Use extreme caution at HWY 29 and HWY 5. The four-way stop light is out.  PLEASE NOTE: Be very careful when driving at night on secondary roads! Stay at home at night if possible.

On Wednesday, we will begin LIMITED TRASH PICK UP in Cherokee County.  Please be patient as we keep safety for everyone in mind. 

The Landfill is open Monday – Saturday from 7:30 am – 6 pm. All items must be separated, no mixed loads.  Everyone must cross scales – NO exceptions.

South Carolina DMV has extended and waived late fees for registration renewal for those due in September. This will be extended until November 1, 2024.
