Considering adopting from our shelter? Become pre-approved as a future adopter today! This does not lock you into adopting one of our animals, but it does allow you to become approved ahead of coming to one of our off-site adoption events or coming into our shelter so that you can take home the animal you fall in love with same day (if animal has been vetted already.)

Cherokee County Animal Shelter & Rescue Adoption Process

Adopt Smarter. Adopt Faster. Adopt with Confidence.

Cherokee County Animal Shelter & Rescue is excited to introduce a Pre-Approved Adopter Program designed to make adoptions faster, more efficient, and more accessible — including same-day adoptions at off-site events.

How the New Adoption Process Works
Step 1: Become a Pre-Approved Adopter

Interested adopters complete a General Adoption Application that allows us to learn about:

  • Your home environment
  • Current pets
  • Veterinary history
  • Ability to provide care and containment

This application is not tied to a specific animal and is valid for up to 12 months once approved.

Step 2: Application Review

Shelter staff review applications and may:

  • Contact veterinary or landlord references
  • Ask follow-up questions if needed

Applicants may be:

  • Approved
  • Approved with conditions (such as cats only, small dogs only, etc.)
  • Asked for additional information
  • Denied if placement would not be appropriate
Step 3: Adopt When You’re Ready

Once approved, you can:

  • Adopt in-shelter
  • Adopt at off-site or after-hours adoption events
  • Take home eligible animals the same day

Some animals are already spayed/neutered and vaccinated and may go home immediately. Others may require a scheduled veterinary appointment prior to final release.

Step 4: Animal-Specific Adoption

When you select an animal:

  • You complete a brief animal-specific adoption agreement
  • Medical status and next steps are reviewed
  • Adoption is finalized or scheduled depending on the animal’s medical needs
